Microsoft releases critical Windows update to all operating systems after WannaCrypt ransomware attack
A major cyber-attack caused digital havoc when it targeted the NHS and many business services across the UK last week. The ransomware known as WannaCrypt maliciously took advantage of a security vulnerability found on 200,000 computers in more than 150 countries worldwide. Once a PC is infected, all files are encrypted by the ransomware and locked behind a paywall, forcing the user to comply or risk losing their files.
On Friday, Microsoft urged customers on all Windows operating systems, including those on unsupported systems such as Windows XP, Windows Vista and Windows Server 2003, to apply the MS17-010 hotfix update as soon as possible. Search ” MS17-010 hotfix” and download only from Microsoft – due to the nature of the problem we cannot include a link here.
There are several other ways you can protect your computers & devices against future ransomware attacks. Installing a cybersecurity solution such as Bitdefender, which you can buy directly from us using the link below and for only £2.49 pm, means you will be protected against zero-day threats, viruses and ransomware. Clients already using Bitdefender were automatically protected from WannaCrypt ransomware, as the cybersecurity software vendor stated last week.
